One from the past- In this photo which I took in early 2020 an injured Koala is held by a veterinary surgeon. I spent nearly 2 weeks on assignment on Kangaroo Island following the efforts of volunteers and specialists who were rescuing and caring for wildlife on the island after massive bushfires tore through the national park and surrounding communities. I was amazed at the volunteers who seemed put all their energy and resources into very unselfish acts helping the animals and the communities It was heart breaking to see such wholesale destruction of animals and property, with the fires nearly wiping out the entire koala population leaving those that survived with very little food and water. I was struck by the way the community rallied around each other and remained positive in face of overwhelming emotion and destruction. At the time everything seemed hopeless, but after several trips back recently, the landscape had started to regenerate and injured animals were slowing being returned to their habitats it gave me a sense of hope for the animals and the people.
